Northwestern University president Michael Schill announced on Thursday that he would be resigning after enduring accusations that he did not do enough to tackle antisemitism on campus.
The school faced cuts of about $790m in federal funds in April from the Trump administration, which accused it of not doing enough to tackle antisemitism after widespread pro-Palestine student protests last spring.
Northwestern was one of the first universities to end its encampments without calling in the police on its students, promising greater transparency of endowment investments and promising to support visiting Palestinian students and faculty. It did, however, crack down on student activism overall, leading to complaints about repression of free speech.
The Trump administration’s funding cuts have led to around 425 layoffs at the univeisity.
